About this Episode

The 2020 US presidential election is considered one of the most important in a century. Everything is at stake, from the health of the world’s most powerful nation to the very nature of truth in the modern world. It's been a frantic race, leaving many despairing at the divisiveness in US politics. But elections don't always have to be so dark. This week on Passport, we take a look at two elections from around the world that reveal a lot about democracy and remind us of its true power. First, we head to the UK, where a bizarre election story unfolded involving two intergalactic space lords vying for the Prime Minister's seat. In 2019, Lord Buckethead, a character from an obscure 1980s Star Wars spoof, was resurrected to stand for election. His competition? Count Binface, another cylindrical-headed candidate. Together, they faced off against Boris Johnson, highlighting the quirks of UK politics and proving that satire has the power to bring politicians down to size. Next, we travel to Uruguay, where we meet Pepe Mujica, a former guerilla turned peace-loving, pragmatic president who ran the country from 2009 to 2015. His story, centered on a tiny farm outside Montevideo, shows how progressive politics and humility can change the world.
